Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on various card games when he was young. He found himself getting really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his father. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to participate in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he played countless hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on poker.

The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would frequently challenge each other. Howard had access into several of the greatest players in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his logical thinking skills. He used these strategic ideas in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the best women players the poker world today. Howard moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the successive 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
