Omaha Hi/Lo: Basic Outline
January 24th, 2016 by Mason

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha hi lo starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some entrants can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in almost every poker game.

A lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

While it seems complicated at first, following a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha hi-low provides an overwhelming range of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several players shooting for the high hand, and several trying for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha hi/lo.
