Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he enjoyed participating in different card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these card games while competing against his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus even more on the game.

The real improvement in his game happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often play against each other. He had access into a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, he would tweak his logical thinking abilities. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit hold’em.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker world today. He relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the next 10 years. When the WPT gained popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
