Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor on the planet by many of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and moved to NJ before his first birthday. His grandpa introduced him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup whatever he possibly could about poker. He routinely would tell his grandparents that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He didn’t allow the detrimental comments from other people annihilate his goal of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.
He began competing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first few years for Phil were a teaching opportunity and winning wasn’t a normal outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved two final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he defeated quite a few of the well known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Phil credits his success to hard work and a continuing love for the game of poker. Phil says that he’s learning every day and is very humble about his achievements. Phil knows he makes mistakes every single game of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Although Phil has come first in some big-time tournaments, he prefers winning money games on a normal basis.
